Just listening again to England's bid presentation in Geneva for the 2018 World Cup. It's enough to bring tears to the eyes. I really hope we get it: we'd be a much, much better location than Russia and the Spain/Portugal bid. We won't get the chance to host it again for ages, so it's really important.
Russia are now doing their bid, Putin is not there which is being interpreted as him not wanting to get any negative press if they don't win it. Our PM gave a really passionate speech, I thought. It might swing a vote and be all important..... The Russian presenter just made a rather mangled point about Russia being a modern country and a "bridge between East and West" by quoting Churchill!
Now here's some amazing CCTV footage. Two women were in a car that slid off a bridge and into an ice-cold river and they couldn't get open the doors to escape. By chance a guy with survival training was nearby, leapt in and managed to save them. Talk about being in the right place at the right time.
UPDATE...The Russian bid presenter, Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, is really droning on. He's covered the time he spent playing football as a boy and his joy at first seeing the "amazing Adidas Jabulani ball".....please!!!
Now he's just claimed that only FIFA can promote social development around the world... I am feeling nauseous.
Update 2: England are now favourite with the bookies....
Update 3: Sepp Blatter's summing up was pretty average after the Russians concluded: "you are...one of the bidders...one of the four bidders...and we will make our decision later this afternoon..congratulations" Bit different to his conclusion on ours, "an excellent and remarkable presentation."
